i went to theatre following on one of my patients who needed a
further debridment of her wound...she was on acute list for theatre and the consultant looking after her was busy and having surgeries on that day as well so he came in when the patient was ready put into sleep ,did the debirdment ( was quite large area involving the thighs and below knees) stuffed the wound with mediums asked me to apply pressure til the wound specialist arrive whoem came in few mins .. the surgeon rushed out to do next operation.. we started to do the VAC dressing ( was 1st time for me to see that done step by step ) we removed the mediums but the wound was still oozing and large amount of blood was coming out .. i grabed the suction and started looking for the source.. and there you go i found 2 small arteries bleeding... i asked the wound specialist to call the surgeon back to clip the arteries .. but he was already in theatre operating.. he looked at me and asked do u know how to use the dithermy i replied with big smile of course i do .. then said to me give it a buzz cos i havent hold that thing since 10 years !! i tried my best but without success then i asked him if we can clip it using a suture and he encourged me to give it a go ...i had mixed feelings : happy that i got the chance to practice knot tieng on real patient but at the same time felt sorry for the patient and scared that i will get into trouble.. finally i did stop the bleeding by doing the knots and the problem was solved .. we commenced the dressing and everything was alright

i have never expected such thing from my consultant ..he seemed caring and very nice to his patients but what he did was quite shoking and irresponsible.. the theatre nurse did case report
